Presentation of Jim Rough's Dynamic Facilitation and has four components

1. Concerns
2. Problem Statements
3. Data
4. Solutions

These four components are a part of the Dynamic Conversation, which leads to Statements of Convergence. These are statements of RESONANCE or AGREEMENT resulting from the conversation. Dynamic Conversation is a self-organizing process. Often a group operates more in the realms of CONCERNS and DATA initially and then moves into PROBLEM STATEMENTS, SOLUTIONS and CONVERGENCES. And even though we have Butterflies and Bumble Bees at the convention, it is valuable to the conversation if people remain engaged. If someone is feeling bored and disconnected and thinking of leaving, it may be that they have something important to contribute.

There does seem to be a correlation between these four components and the four components of NVC:

Pennie initiated our conversation with a PROBLEM STATEMENT: What is fundamentally the most significant problem we face moving this work forward, and how do we overcome it?

This generated comments that flowed between Concerns, Data, other Problem Statements, and Solutions.

Rather than following the entire flow chronologically, I (LindaAlima) am just listing them all here.

Problem Statements:

*Is "it" how NVC and Partnership get together?
*What is the vision for "growing" NVC?
*Could we make these questions become statements?
*The whole world isn't using NVC.
*(participant) is personally dissatisfied with how slowly NVC is spreading in the world.
*(participant) is personally dissatisfied with how few people in their own life are using NVC.
*How do we get access to the people who are empowered to make change in an organization?
*How do we get away from "us & them" to be Partners within Conflict?
*How do we get into media/corporations without the image of conflict? WITH the image of being partners with media/corporations?
*How do we (NVC) fit in the "Future 500"?
*How do we EMBRACE conflict?
*What is the "we"? How to define it…
*NVC mastery and Partnering mastery are 2 distinct skills & knowing both facilitates it getting out there.
*Our culture/media focuses on conflict.
*Enemy images - how do we get rid of them? (Clear them?)
*How do we learn to use this process most effectively?

(Conversation about yesterdays conversation about Social Change & CNVC regarding the question of the personal and the collective (corporations) - the personal embodies the corporation, and can be the avenue for change in the corporation---access us the issue, 3rd party can aid access….rid ourselves of enemy images---the media focuses on conflict-our own process clearing enemy images.

Terry Dobson has said the purpose of conflict is harmony.

Pennie then identified that we had moved into a new set of Problem Statements:

*How do we become masters and live the process of NVC?
*Is "it" then "becoming masters in NVC"?
*We need to strategize the edges of what would come up regarding resistances of institutions that are in power now.
*What is our definite plan of action?
*How do we get and maintain connections while organizing and doing tasks?

CONCERNS

*What is "this work"?
*Maybe there's some tension between Partnership and NVC?
*2 of the Problem Statements are not statements
*uncomfortable with "get NVC & Partnership together"…like it's "a must"
*it would take too much energy to "get NVC & Partnership together"
*it's exclusive to only deal with NVC and CPS (or NVC through CPS, or vice versa)
*writing these words down (in this process) seems redundant
*participant not understanding the fundamentals of Dynamic, of prioritizing (how?), visions behind the Problem Statements posed
*it's too limiting to personalize problems only-need to institutionalize
*enemy images leads to less effectiveness when seeking change
*participant not feeling included in this process
*process seems amorphous, not concrete enough-topic is too big to get understanding of the DF process
*this amorphousness is creating a problem
*some people are leaving the discussion
*will the statement about NVC & mastery Problem Statement meet the needs of the Partnership folks?
*this topic is overwhelming/ brings up fear
*definition of "conflict" and "harmony" is not clear enough-"conflict" sounds like "enemy"
*what is the "we"? is there some implication of only one way to meeting needs?

DATA

*Individuals embody corporations
*MBR uses examples of school
*Flowing with the enemy, book, THE MAGIC OF CONFLICT by Thomas Crumb
*Terry Dobson says "The purpose of conflict is harmony."
*Someone said "Republicans are smart because they organize."
*Lots of people protesting the WTO etc, focus on conflict not issues
*The FUTURE 500-Mitsubishi-My Visit to the Rainforest-corps working with ecological model
*Depressed people look at the past -optimistic people look to the future (studies show)
*Healing takes place in the present
*Solutions take place in the present and future

SOLUTIONS

*Keep NVC & Partnership separate
*Have NVC & Partnership dialogues
*Personalize problem instead of universalize it
*Work with institutions for a broader influence
*Once access is achieved, communication is between PEOPLE, not institutions
*Use 3rd parties to gain access
*Work with media to get different points of view out there
*"enemy images" - turn them into humans
*Working with something smaller (a smaller topic)
Mastery questions:
*Engage in process really fully to learn it most effectively
*Becoming a master involves dealing with "resisting" institutions
*Get more organized with strategy and collaboration - getting more simplified and elegant
*Organization comes from connections…and vice versa
*Loving the enemy for a week -connect around this
*See the Partnership within conflict
*The "work" gets "out there" through collaboration of working between NVC & Partnership
*Buy stock, become a voter in a corporation
*Get into corporations or segments of them working with the ecological mode - introduce NVC to the Future 500
*Have Marshall do a workshop with Future 500 companies
*Look to FUTURE - ASK where can we go from here?
New Level
*Become a master by taking pieces of this and that (NVC, Partnership Way, other paths) & putting them together to move forward as an individual
*NVC works even if only some people use it in a situation
*Some people having both NVC and Partnership skills will bring out the synthesis -consultants, mediators

CONVERGENCES

1. Peace and connection move forward when people work toward mastery of NVC and other partnership skills.

2. The process of mastery includes inner work, clearing enemy images, embracing conflict, and understanding institutional dynamics as a human process.

3. (We ran out of time, but ordinarily, a group would want to try for 3 statements of resonance. We started to identify a statement about the energy of moving from conflict to harmony, but didn't have time to work out the details, wording.)
